On Rama’s Dharma and the Peril of Abduction
न च पित्रा परित्यक्तो नामर्यादः कथञ्चन।न लुब्धो न च दुश्शीलो न च क्षत्रियपांसनः।।।।न च धर्मगुणैर्हीनः कौसल्यानन्दवर्धनः।न तीक्ष्णो न च भूतानां सर्वेषामहिते रतः।।।।
na ca pitrā parityakto nāmaryādaḥ kathañcana |
na lubdho na ca duśśīlo na ca kṣatriyapāṃsanaḥ ||
na ca dharmaguṇair hīnaḥ kausalyānandavardhanaḥ |
na tīkṣṇo na ca bhūtānāṃ sarveṣām ahite rataḥ ||
Rāma, que acrecienta el gozo de Kausalyā, no ha sido repudiado por su padre, ni jamás ha traspasado los límites de la rectitud. No es codicioso ni de mala conducta, ni es oprobio de los kṣatriyas. No carece de dharma ni de virtud; no es cruel, ni se deleita en dañar a ningún ser.
Hope the daughter of Janaka is not born to put an end to your life. Hope I will not face any disaster on account of Sita.
Dharma is defined as maryādā (moral boundaries), compassion toward all beings, and freedom from greed and vice—qualities embodied by Rama.
Mārīca describes Rama’s character to dissuade Rāvaṇa from provoking a righteous, disciplined hero who does not act from cruelty but from dharma.
Rama’s maryādā, compassion, and moral integrity—he is portrayed as the kṣatriya ideal who harms none without righteous cause.
