Kārtika-Māhātmya
The Greatness of Kārtika
Sage Narada (teaching within a Tirtha-Mahatmya context)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: adbhuta (wonder)
Secondary Rasa: bhakti (devotion)
It proclaims the extraordinary purifying power of darśana (sacred sight): beholding the holy maṇḍala is said to negate even heavy sin-karma so strongly that it prevents further confinement in the womb, implying swift spiritual uplift and release from painful rebirth conditions.
By emphasizing “seeing” the sacred maṇḍala, the verse highlights bhakti expressed through reverent darśana—approaching the holy presence with faith—where grace and merit arise not only from complex rites but also from devoted encounter with the sacred.
The phrase “on that day” points to ritual timing (kāla-niyama), aligning with Jyotiṣa-style calendrical selection used in vrata and tirtha observances—choosing an auspicious/defined day for darśana to maximize religious merit.
