उस समय अर्जुन शत्रुओंको छोड़कर--उन्हें जीवनदान दे, मदकी धारा बहानेवाले हाथीकी भाँति मस्तीकी चालसे विराटनगरकी ओर लौटे जा रहे थे। कौरवोंको उनपर आक्रमण करनेका साहस नहीं हुआ ।। ततः स तन्मेघमिवापततन्तं विद्राव्य पार्थ: कुरुसैन्यवृन्दम् । मत्स्यस्य पुत्र द्विषतां निहन्ता वचोडब्रवीत् सम्परिरभ्य भूय:,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये
tataḥ sa tanmegham ivāpatatantaṃ vidrāvya pārthaḥ kurusainyavṛndam | matsyasya putro dviṣatāṃ nihantā vaco 'bravīt samparirabhya bhūyaḥ, kṣutpipāsāpariśrāntā videśasthā viceṭasaḥ |
Dijo Vaiśampāyana: Entonces Pārtha (Arjuna), tras dispersar a la hueste Kuru que se había precipitado sobre él como una nube de tormenta, volvió de nuevo hacia la ciudad de Virāṭa con el paso orgulloso y sin prisa de un elefante en celo—concediendo la vida a sus enemigos en vez de perseguirlos hasta la destrucción. Los Kauravas ya no se atrevieron a atacarlo. Cuando las tropas Kuru se retiraron o huyeron en todas direcciones, muchos soldados kauravas que se habían ocultado en la espesura del bosque salieron y se acercaron a Arjuna temblando. El miedo se había apoderado de sus mentes; estaban abatidos por el hambre, la sed y el cansancio, y al hallarse en tierra extraña su angustia crecía aún más.
