Aśvatthāman’s Admonition to Karṇa on Boasting, Varṇa-Duties, and the Threat of Arjuna

तं शब्द कुरवो&जानन् विस्फोटमशनेरिव । यदर्जुनो धनुःश्रेष्ठ बाहुभ्यामाक्षिपद् रथे,वह भयानक शब्द पृथ्वीको विदीर्ण करता-सा गूँज उठा। सम्पूर्ण दिशाओंमें प्रचण्ड आँधी चलने लगी, महान् उल्कापात होने लगा और दिशाओंमें अन्धकार छा गया। शत्रुसेनाके ध्वज आकाशमें अकारण हिलने लगे। बड़े-बड़े वृक्ष भी हिलने लगे। अर्जुनने अपने दोनों हाथोंसे रथपर बैठे-बैठे जो अपने श्रेष्ठ धनुषकी टंकार-ध्वनि की, उसे सुनकर कौरवोंने समझा, कहींसे बिजली टूट पड़ी है
vaiśampāyana uvāca | taṃ śabdaṃ kuravo 'jānan visphoṭam aśaner iva | yad arjuno dhanuḥśreṣṭhaṃ bāhubhyām ākṣipad rathe ||
Dijo Vaiśampāyana: Al oír aquel sonido, los Kauravas lo entendieron como el chasquido repentino de un rayo. Pues cuando Arjuna, sentado en el carro, tensó y dejó resonar con ambos brazos su arco supremo, se alzó una reverberación terrible—como si la tierra se partiera. Entonces, los puntos cardinales parecieron tomados por vientos violentos; cayeron meteoros en gran número; la oscuridad se extendió por las direcciones; los estandartes del ejército enemigo temblaron en el cielo sin causa aparente; y hasta los grandes árboles se sacudieron. Así, por el trueno de la cuerda, los Kauravas creyeron que un relámpago había caído cerca: presagio del poder irresistible del guerrero y de la inminente derrota de la agresión injusta.
