Steadfast resolve (niścaya) expressed through disciplined vows like fasting is presented as a dharmic means of purification and spiritual focus; true 'wealth' for ascetics is tapas, not possessions.
At a sacred tīrtha, the protagonists undertake multiple fasts with firm determination, and the sanctity of the place and the austerity being practiced draws large numbers of ascetic Brahmins to assemble there.
