When adversity makes even the righteous despondent, wise counsel rooted in dharma restores steadiness (dhairya) and right judgment; reassurance is presented as an ethical duty of a guide toward those in distress.
Vaiśampāyana describes the Pāṇḍavas as continually anxious and dejected; seeing them, their priest Dhaumya begins to comfort them and prepares to speak, setting up guidance connected with their journey and sacred places.
