यम उवाच पतिव्रतासि सावित्रि तथैव च तपो<न्विता । अतस्त्वामभिभाषामि विद्धि मां त्वं शुभे यमम्‌,यमराज बोले--सावित्री! तू पतिव्रता और तपस्विनी है, इसलिये मैं तुझसे वार्तालाप कर सकता हूँ। शुभे! तू मुझे यमराज जान

yama uvāca: pativratāsi sāvitrī tathaiva ca tapo'nvitā | atas tvām abhibhāṣāmi viddhi māṁ tvaṁ śubhe yamam ||

Dijo Yama: «Sāvitrī, eres firme en la fidelidad conyugal y, del mismo modo, estás dotada de poder ascético. Por eso puedo hablar contigo. Oh, bienaventurada, sabe que yo soy Yama, el Señor de la Muerte».
