Duryodhana’s Fast: Śakuni’s Consolation and the Summoning of a Kṛtyā
जानासि हि यथा क्षत्ता द्यूतकाल उपस्थिते । अब्रवीद् यच्च मां त्वां च सौबलं वचनं तदा,“जुएका अवसर उपस्थित होनेपर विदुरजीने मुझसे, तुमसे तथा (मामा) शकुनिसे जैसी बातें कही थीं, उन्हें तो तुम जानते ही हो
jānāsi hi yathā kṣattā dyūtakāla upasthite | abravīd yac ca māṃ tvāṃ ca saubalaṃ vacanaṃ tadā ||
Dijo Vaiśampāyana: Tú ya sabes cómo, cuando llegó la hora del juego de dados, el mayordomo de la corte, Vidura, habló entonces—dirigiéndose a mí, a ti y a Śakuni de la estirpe de Saubala—con aquellas palabras.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse points to Vidura’s role as a moral counselor: when destructive choices (like gambling and deceit) arise, righteous speech should warn, restrain, and recall the ethical consequences for the kingdom and family.
Vaiśampāyana reminds the listener that, at the moment the dice-game was about to take place, Vidura addressed the assembly—speaking to the narrator, to the person being addressed, and to Śakuni—recalling the admonitions he gave at that critical time.
