Duryodhana’s Shame and Consideration of Prāyopaveśa
विनिन्दतां तथा5७त्मानं जीवितं च धनच्युतम् । न तथा हि सभामध्ये तस्या भवितुमहति । वैमनस्यं यथा दृष्टवा तव भार्या: स्वलंकृता:,“वह धनसे वज्चित हुए अपने आत्मा तथा जीवनकी निन्दा करे--उन्हें बार-बार धिकक्कारे। सभामें उसके साथ जो बर्ताव किया गया था, उससे उसके हृदयमें इतना दुःख नहीं हुआ होगा, जितना कि तुम्हारी रानियोंको वस्त्राभूषणोंसे विभूषित देखकर हो सकता है!

vinindatāṃ tathātmānaṃ jīvitaṃ ca dhanacyutam |
na tathā hi sabhāmadhye tasyā bhavitum arhati |
vaimanasyaṃ yathā dṛṣṭvā tava bhāryāḥ su-alaṅkṛtāḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana dijo: «Que ella se condene una y otra vez, incluso que condene su propia vida, ahora que ha sido despojada de sus riquezas. Pues la pena que podría nacer en su corazón al ver a tus esposas ricamente ataviadas con vestidos y joyas sería mayor que el dolor que debió sentir por el trato que recibió en medio de la asamblea».
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights how social comparison and the sight of others’ prosperity can intensify grief more than an earlier public insult. Ethically, it points to the corrosive power of envy and status-loss, and warns that humiliation is not only physical or public but also psychological—renewed by reminders of inequality.
Vaiśampāyana describes a woman’s likely inner turmoil after losing wealth: she may reproach herself and even her life. He suggests that seeing the listener’s wives/queens adorned in finery would cause her deeper dejection than what happened to her in the assembly, emphasizing the ongoing sting of dispossession and comparison.
