Draupadī and Satyabhāmā on ethical household conduct
अग्निर्यश्न शिवो नाम शक्तिपूजापरश्न सः | दुःखार्तानां च सर्वेषां शिवकृत् सततं शिव:,'शिव” नामसे प्रसिद्ध जो अग्नि हैं, वे शक्तिकी आराधनामें लगे रहते हैं। समस्त दुःखातुर मनुष्योंका सदा ही शिव (कल्याण) करते हैं, इसलिये उन्हें 'शिव” कहते हैं
agnir yaḥ śivo nāma śaktipūjāparaś ca saḥ | duḥkhārtānāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ śivakṛt satataṃ śivaḥ ||
Dijo Mārkaṇḍeya: «Aquel Fuego, célebre con el nombre de “Śiva”, está siempre entregado al culto de Śakti. Sin cesar procura bienestar a todos los afligidos por el dolor; por eso se le llama “Śiva”: el benéfico.»
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse explains the etymological and ethical sense of the name ‘Śiva’: the divine is called Śiva because he continually brings welfare (śiva) to beings in distress, emphasizing compassion and beneficence as defining divine qualities.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing a form/aspect of Agni who is known as ‘Śiva’ and is devoted to Śakti-worship, highlighting his role as a constant benefactor of those suffering.
