Chapter 220
महाभाग! ब्राह्मणलोग त्रिविध उक्थ मन्त्रोंद्रार जिसकी स्तुति करते हैं, जिसने महावाणी (परा)-का आविष्कार किया है तथा ज्ञानी पुरुष जिसे आश्वासन देनेवाला समझते हैं; उस अग्निका नाम 'उक्थ' है ।। इति श्रीमहा भारते वनपर्वणि मार्कण्डेयसमास्यापर्वणि आंगिरसोपाख्याने एकोनविंशत्यधिकद्वधिशततमो<5ध्याय:
mahābhāga! brāhmaṇalogāḥ trividhauktha-mantraiḥ yasya stutiṃ kurvanti, yena mahāvāṇī (parā) āviṣkṛtā, tathā jñāninaḥ puruṣāḥ yaṃ āśvāsana-dātāraṃ manyante; tasya agneḥ nāma “uktha” iti.
Dijo Mārkaṇḍeya: «¡Oh noble! Los brahmanes alaban a ese Fuego con los himnos Uktha, triples en su forma. Él fue quien hizo surgir la Palabra suprema (Parā), y los sabios lo tienen por dador de sosiego y de firme confianza interior. Ese Fuego lleva el nombre de “Uktha”.»
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse elevates Agni as more than physical fire: he is the object of Vedic praise (uktha) and is linked to the manifestation of Parā-vāk (supreme speech). Ethically, it suggests that true reassurance and steadiness come from alignment with sacred order—ritual, truthful speech, and wisdom.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing a particular form/name of Agni called “Uktha,” explaining how Brahmins praise him with threefold uktha-mantras and why the wise consider him a source of reassurance.
