Nārāyaṇopadeśa to Mārkaṇḍeya (Cosmic Self-Identification and Yuga Doctrine) |

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that dāna (charitable giving) is a central dharmic duty and that different gifts yield corresponding spiritual results: cows lead to superior heavenly attainment, draught-oxen to the Sun’s realm, garments to the Moon’s realm, and gold to an enduring, ‘deathless’ reward.

Mārkaṇḍeya is instructing his listeners by listing the karmic fruits of specific donations, using well-known cosmic destinations (Sun-world and Moon-world) to emphasize the moral and spiritual power of generosity.
