ततो5स्मि पतितो भूमौ न च मामजहात्‌ स्मृति: स्मार्तमस्ति पुराणं मे यथैवाधिगतं तथा,“उनके इतना कहते ही मैं पृथ्वीपर गिर पड़ा। परंतु आज भी वह पुरानी स्मरण-शक्ति मुझे छोड़ नहीं सकी है। यद्यपि यह वृत्तान्त बहुत पुराना हो चुका है तथापि जो कुछ जैसे हुआ था; वह सब मुझे ज्यों-का-त्यों स्मरण है

tato ’smi patito bhūmau na ca mām ajahāt smṛtiḥ | smārtam asti purāṇaṃ me yathaivādhigataṃ tathā ||

Dijo Vaiśampāyana: «Apenas habló así, caí al suelo. Sin embargo, mi facultad de recordar no me abandonó. Aunque este relato es antiquísimo, todo cuanto sucedió—tal como fue vivido—permanece presente en mi memoria».
