Āraṇyaka-parva, Adhyāya 1 — The Pandavas’ Exit from Gajasāhvaya and the Citizens’ Lament
nivartatāgatā dūraṃ samāgamanaśāpitāḥ | svajane nyāsabhūte me kāryā snehānvitā matiḥ ||
Even in exile and distress, one should act with dharma: avoid burdening others unnecessarily, and treat dependents and relatives as a sacred trust to be protected with steady affection and responsibility.
As the Pāṇḍavas depart for the forest, Yudhiṣṭhira urges those who have followed them to turn back, formally binding them by an oath-like request. He reminds them that his own people remain with them as a ‘deposit’ (nyāsa), and asks them to keep affectionate care toward those left behind.
