Omens and Reception During Keśava’s Departure
भीष्म द्रोणं कृपं चैव महाराजं च बाह्विकम् | द्रौ्णिंच सोमदत्तं च सर्वाश्ष भरतान् प्रति
bhīṣmaṃ droṇaṃ kṛpaṃ caiva mahārājaṃ ca bāhvīkam | drauṇiṃ ca somadattaṃ ca sarvāṃś ca bharatān prati ||
Dijo Yudhiṣṭhira: «(Me dirigiré a) Bhīṣma, Droṇa y Kṛpa; y también al rey Bāhlīka; a Aśvatthāmā, hijo de Droṇa; y a Somadatta—en verdad, a todos los Bharata.» En este instante, sus palabras presentan la súplica venidera no como mero regateo político, sino como una exhortación dhármica a venerables ancianos y parientes, cuya autoridad y conciencia son decisivas para contener la violencia.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच
Even in the approach to war, dharma requires first appealing to conscience, seniority, and kinship bonds—especially by addressing elders and teachers whose moral authority can avert or limit adharma.
Yudhiṣṭhira enumerates the principal Kuru elders and leaders—Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Bāhlīka, Aśvatthāmā, Somadatta, and the wider Bharata clan—indicating those to whom his forthcoming words or appeal are directed in the tense pre-war negotiations of the Udyoga Parva.
