Sanatsujāta–Dhṛtarāṣṭra Saṃvāda: Pramāda as Mṛtyu
Chapter 42
asmi loke tapas tapta phalam anyatra bhujyate | br1hma1n1m ime lok1 ddhe tapasi tihat1m ||
Sanatsuj1ta teaches that tapas (disciplined austerity) done in this life does not always yield immediate, worldly results; its true fruit is often experienced in other realms. The verse elevates steadfast spiritual effort as a source of enduring reward and spiritual status.
Within the Sanatsuj1tiya section of the Udyoga Parva, Sanatsuj1ta instructs (in a didactic, ethical-spiritual mode) about the nature of merit and its fruition. He emphasizes to his listener that the rewards of ascetic discipline accrue beyond the visible, political world and are associated with the br1hmaa ideal of firm tapas.
