गजा विंशतिसाहस्रा ईषादन्ता: प्रहारिण: । कुलीना भिन्नकरटा मेघा इव विसर्पिण:
gajā viṁśatisāhasrā īṣādantāḥ prahāriṇaḥ | kulīnā bhinnakaraṭā meghā iva visarpīṇaḥ ||
Vaiśaṃpāyana dijo: «Veinte mil elefantes—con colmillos recios como vigas y adiestrados para herir—, de noble estirpe, con las sienes hendidas y manando, avanzaban extendiéndose como nubes». La escena evoca el ímpetu creciente de la guerra: poder disciplinado reunido en número inmenso, imponente y a la vez ominoso por su capacidad de daño.
