Amba–Rama–Bhishma Dialogue on Vow and Refuge
rāma uvāca smarāmy ahaṃ pūrvakṛtāṃ pratijñām ṛṣisattama | tathaiva ca cariṣyāmi yathā sāmnaiva lapsyate ||
Rāma said: “O best of sages, I remember the vow I made long ago. Even so, I shall proceed in such a way that the matter may be accomplished by conciliation alone.”
Even when bound by an earlier vow, one should strive to resolve matters through sāman—peaceful persuasion and conciliation—showing restraint and preference for non-violent, ethical means.
Rāma (Paraśurāma) addresses a foremost sage, recalls a prior promise he had made, and declares that he will act so that the desired outcome is achieved through conciliation rather than escalation.
