अध्याय १२२ — कृष्णस्य दुर्योधनं प्रति नीत्युपदेशः

Kṛṣṇa’s Ethical Counsel to Duryodhana

अतः गान्धारीनन्दन! तुम भी अभिमान और क्रोधको त्याग दो। वीर नरेश! तुम पाण्डवोंसे संधि कर लो और क्रोधके आवेशको सदाके लिये छोड़ दो ।। (स भवान्‌ सुहदां पथ्यं वचो गृह्नातु मानृतम्‌ । समर्थर्विग्रहं कृत्वा विषमस्थो भविष्यसि ।। ) तुम अपने सुहृदोंके हितकर वचन मान लो। असत्य आचरणको न अपनाओ, अन्यथा शक्तिशाली पाण्डवोंके साथ युद्ध ठानकर तुम बड़े भारी संकटमें पड़ जाओगे। ददाति यत्‌ पार्थिव यत्‌ करोति यद्‌ वा तपस्तप्यति यज्जुहोति । न तस्य नाशो<स्ति न चापकर्षो नान्यस्तदश्ाति स एव कर्ता,भूपाल! मनुष्य जो दान देता है, जो कर्म करता है, जो तपस्यामें प्रवृत्त होता है और जो होम-यज्ञ आदिका अनुष्ठान करता है, उसके इस कर्मका न तो नाश होता है और न उसमें कोई कमी ही होती है। उसके कर्मको दूसरा कोई नहीं भोगता। कर्ता स्वयं ही अपने शुभाशुभ कर्मोंका फल भोगता है

ataḥ gāndhārīnandana! tvam api abhimānaṁ ca krodhaṁ ca tyaja. vīra nareśa! tvaṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha sandhiṁ kuru, krodhāveśaṁ ca sadā-kṛte parityaja. sa bhavān suhṛdāṁ pathyaṁ vaco gṛhṇātu, mā anṛtam. samarthair vigrahaṁ kṛtvā viṣamastho bhaviṣyasi. dadāti yat pārthiva yat karoti yad vā tapas tapyati yaj juhoti, na tasya nāśo ’sti na cāpakarṣo, nānyas tad aśnāti sa eva kartā, bhūpāla!

Nārada dijo: «Por eso, oh hijo de Gāndhārī, abandona el orgullo y la ira. Oh rey heroico, haz la paz con los Pāṇḍavas y renuncia de una vez por todas al oleaje de la cólera. Acepta el consejo sano y provechoso de tus bienhechores; no te entregues a una conducta falsa. De lo contrario, al escoger la guerra contra los poderosos Pāṇḍavas, caerás en un peligro grave y funesto. Oh soberano, cuanto un hombre da en caridad, cuanto obra, cuanto practica austeridades y cuanto ofrece en sacrificio: nada de ello se pierde ni se mengua. Nadie más consume el fruto de esas acciones; sólo el hacedor experimenta el resultado de sus propios actos, buenos y malos.»

Educational Q&A

Nārada urges Duryodhana to renounce pride and anger, accept the salutary counsel of well-wishers, and choose reconciliation over war. He reinforces this ethically by invoking karma: actions—charity, deeds, austerity, sacrifice—do not vanish; the doer alone must experience their results, so one should act rightly and avoid false conduct.

In Udyoga Parva, as the prospect of the Kurukṣetra war intensifies, the sage Nārada addresses Gāndhārī’s son (Duryodhana). He warns that provoking conflict with the powerful Pāṇḍavas will lead to severe danger and counsels him to make peace and restrain wrath.
