Educational Q&A

The verse emphasizes the authority of tradition through lineage: knowledge is validated and preserved when transmitted from a recognized teacher (Vyāsa) through a disciple (Vaiśampāyana) and faithfully retold by a narrator (Sauti). It models disciplined listening and responsible narration as ethical duties in conveying dharma.

Sauti addresses the sage Śaunaka and announces that he will recount the Purāṇic subject that King Janamejaya had earlier asked, which was answered in the presence of Vyāsa’s wise disciple Vaiśampāyana. This functions as a framing transition into the forthcoming discourse.
