Ignorance makes one repeatedly identify with and cling to the guṇas, which perpetuates bondage; liberation comes only when one knows the Self as distinct from and unattached to the guṇas.
In Śānti Parva’s instruction on liberation, the sage Yājñavalkya explains the mechanism of bondage and release: repeated guṇa-association born of ignorance prevents freedom, while Self-recognition is the decisive turning point.
