Affection can become a binding force; therefore one should listen to ethical instruction with full attentiveness and discernment, because only a clear, understanding mind can recognize and loosen such subtle bonds.
In the Śānti Parva instruction sequence, Bhīṣma begins a didactic explanation to the listener (Yudhiṣṭhira) about the ‘nooses’ or constraints produced by attachment, prefacing the teaching by urging careful, intelligent listening.
