Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca—
Bhrātaraḥ pitaraḥ pautrā jñātayaḥ suhṛdaḥ sutāḥ |
Artha-hetoḥ hatāḥ krūraiḥ asmābhiḥ pāpa-karmabhiḥ ||
Craving for wealth (artha-janya tṛṣṇā) can overpower judgment and lead to adharma; the verse frames renunciation of greed as an ethical necessity and the starting point for inner purification after violence.
In the aftermath of the Kurukṣetra war, Yudhiṣṭhira confesses moral anguish to his grandsire Bhīṣma, lamenting that wealth-driven desire led to the destruction of family and friends, and he asks how to remove this craving.
