Adhyāya 270 — Yudhiṣṭhira’s inquiry on saṃnyāsa; Bhīṣma on calculable time, tamas, and karma
Vṛtra–Uśanā exemplum begins
This line is a colophon rather than a teaching verse: it marks the completion of a chapter and situates the preceding material within the Śānti Parva’s broader ethical instruction (dharma), specifically in a sub-episode connected with Go (cow) and Kapila.
The text is concluding: it announces that the 270th chapter—within the Śānti Parva, under the internal section titled Gokṣa-dharma Parva, and focused on the Gokāpiliyopākhyāna—has ended, with the speaker indicated as Kapila.
