Bali–Vāsava Dialogue on Kāla and Steadfastness

सर्वभूतहिते युक्तो न सम यो द्विषते जनम्‌ | महाह्द इवाक्षो भ्य: प्रज्ञातृप्त: प्रसीदति

sarvabhūtahite yukto na sa yo dviṣate janam | mahāhrada ivākṣobhyaḥ prajñātṛptaḥ prasīdati |

Bhishma dijo: Quien se consagra al bien de todos los seres y no odia a persona alguna es inconmovible: profundo y firme como un vasto embalse de aguas. Tal hombre, dueño de sí, al dar incluso lo difícil de obtener por el bien de las criaturas vivientes y al llevar dicha a los demás, se vuelve él mismo gozoso. Su mente nunca se agita; permanece continuamente satisfecho y sereno por el contento nacido de la sabiduría.

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that true ethical excellence lies in universal benevolence and the absence of hatred. A person devoted to the good of all beings becomes inwardly steady and unshaken, attaining lasting contentment and serenity through wisdom and self-restraint.

In the Shanti Parva, Bhishma instructs Yudhishthira on dharma after the war. Here he describes the qualities of a virtuous, self-controlled person: one who benefits others, harbors no malice, and remains calm and satisfied like a deep, undisturbed reservoir.
