मनुरुवाच — इन्द्रिय-मनः-ज्ञान-क्रमः
Manu on the hierarchy of senses, mind, and knowledge
मन:समाधिरत्रापि तथेन्द्रियजय: स्मृतः । राजन! यहाँ जैसा कारण सुना जाता है, वैसा आगे बताया जायगा। सांख्य और योग --इन दोनों मार्गोंमें भी मनोनिग्रह और इन्द्रियसंयम आवश्यक माने गये हैं
manaḥ-samādhir atrāpi tathendriya-jayaḥ smṛtaḥ | rājan! yathā kāraṇaṃ śrūyate tathāgre vakṣyate | sāṅkhya-yogau—anayoḥ ubhayor api manonigraha indriya-saṃyamaś ca āvaśyakaḥ manyate |
Dijo Bhishma: «Aquí también se declara esencial la absorción mental (samādhi) y la conquista de los sentidos. Oh Rey, la razón, tal como se ha oído, será explicada más adelante. En ambos caminos—Sāṅkhya y Yoga—se consideran indispensables el dominio de la mente y la disciplina de los sentidos».
भीष्म उवाच
Both Sāṅkhya (knowledge/discrimination) and Yoga (practice/discipline) require the same ethical-psychological foundation: mastery of the senses and restraint of the mind, culminating in steady concentration (samādhi).
Bhishma continues instructing King Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and the means to inner freedom, emphasizing that regardless of the chosen philosophical path, mental and sensory discipline is mandatory, and promising to explain the supporting rationale later.
