Subtle Dharma and the Primacy of Renunciation

Yudhiṣṭhira highlights an apparent Vedic duality: the Veda authorizes both engagement in prescribed action (karma) and the renunciation of action (tyāga). The verse sets up a reconciliation between practical dharma (apara) and liberating knowledge (para).
In the Śānti Parva’s discourse on peace and dharma after the war, Yudhiṣṭhira begins by stating his familiarity with both ritual-ethical teachings and higher spiritual teachings, preparing to ask how these seemingly opposite Vedic directives should be understood together.
