Śaraṇāgata-Atithi-Dharma in the Kapota Narrative (कपोत-आख्यानम्—शरणागतधर्मः)

श्षपच उवाच आत्मैव साक्षी कुलधर्मकृत्ये त्वमेव जानासि यदत्र दुष्कृतम्‌ । यो ह्ाद्रियाद्‌ भक्ष्यमिति श्वमांसं मन्ये न तस्यास्ति विवर्जनीयम्‌,चाण्डालने कहा--किस कुलके लिये कौन-सा कार्य धर्म है, इस विषयमें यह आत्मा ही साक्षी है। इस अभक्ष्य-भक्षणमें जो पाप है, उसे आप भी जानते हैं। मेरी समझमें जो कुत्तेके मांसको भक्षणीय बताकर उसका आदर करे, उसके लिये इस संसारमें कुछ भी त्याज्य नहीं है

śvapaca uvāca: ātmaiva sākṣī kuladharmakṛtye tvam eva jānāsi yad atra duṣkṛtam | yo hy ādriyād bhakṣyam iti śvamāṁsaṁ manye na tasyāsti vivarjanīyam ||

El proscrito dijo: «En lo que atañe a cuál es el deber de linaje y la conducta recta, el Ser mismo es el testigo. Tú también sabes qué falta hay en este acto de comer lo que no debe comerse. A mi entender, quien honra la carne de perro como “apta para comer” ya no tiene en este mundo nada de lo que se abstendría».
