Educational Q&A

A ruler prospers when he practices discernment in administration: selecting servants of good qualities and placing each in the role that fits their abilities. Proper appointment and task-allocation are presented as a key element of rāja-dharma and a direct cause of successful kingship.

In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on rāja-dharma, Bhishma continues advising the king on statecraft. Here he emphasizes the practical ethical principle of governance: staffing the administration with competent, virtuous people and assigning them to suitable posts, which yields the ‘fruit’ of rule.
