Sage Assembly and Yudhiṣṭhira’s Articulation of Grief
kathaṃ nu śapto bhrātā me tattvaṃ vaktum ihārhasi | nāradajī! saṃgrāme karṇasya pahiye ko pṛthvī kyoṃ nigala gayī aura mere baṛe bhāī karṇako kaise yaha śāpa prāpta huā? ise āpa ṭhīk-ṭhīk batāne kī kṛpā kareṃ |
The verse frames a dharmic inquiry into causality: extraordinary events in war are not random but linked to prior actions (karma) and moral transgressions that mature as consequences (often expressed as a śāpa). It also models the ethical duty to seek and speak 'tattva'—the true cause—rather than accept appearances.
After the war, Yudhiṣṭhira questions the sage Nārada about a decisive battlefield incident: Karṇa’s chariot wheel becoming trapped as if the earth swallowed it. He asks how Karṇa came to be cursed in a way that contributed to this downfall, requesting an accurate account of the cause.
