शल्यस्य सेनापत्याभ्युपगमः | Śalya’s Acceptance of Command

नोत्सहेड्द्य द्विजश्रेष्ठ पाण्डवान्‌ वक्तुमीदृशम्‌ “तात! मैंने बहुत-से यज्ञोंका अनुष्ठान कर लिया। ब्राह्मणोंको पर्याप्त दक्षिणाएँ दे दीं। सारी कामनाएँ पूर्ण कर लीं। वेदोंका श्रवण कर लिया। शत्रुओंके माथेपर पैर रखा और भरण-पोषणके योग्य व्यक्तियोंके पालन-पोषणकी अच्छी व्यवस्था कर दी। इतना ही नहीं

notsahedya dvijaśreṣṭha pāṇḍavān vaktum īdṛśam | tātāhaṃ bahu-śo yajñān anuṣṭhitavān brāhmaṇebhyaḥ paryāptā dakṣiṇā dattāḥ sarvāḥ kāmanāḥ pūritāḥ vedāḥ śrutāḥ śatrūṇāṃ mastake pādaḥ kṛtaḥ bharaṇa-poṣaṇa-yogyānāṃ ca poṣaṇe suvyavasthā kṛtā | dīnoddhāra-kāryam api sampāditam ataḥ dvijaśreṣṭha nāhaṃ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha evaṃvidhāṃ sandhi-yācanāṃ kartum utsahe || jitāni para-rāṣṭrāṇi sva-rāṣṭram anupālitam nānā-bhogān bhuktavān dharmārtha-kāmān sevitaḥ pitṝṇāṃ ca kṣatriya-dharmasya ca ṛṇābhyām uṛṇaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ ||

Sañjaya dijo: «Oh el mejor de los brahmanes, no puedo obligarme a hablar a los Pándavas de este modo: “Querido, ya he realizado muchos sacrificios; he dado abundantes dakṣiṇās a los brahmanes; he colmado mis deseos; he escuchado los Vedas; he puesto mi pie sobre las cabezas de los enemigos; y he dispuesto debidamente el sustento de quienes dependen de mí. Más aún, también he concluido obras de socorro para los afligidos. Por eso, oh el mejor de los brahmanes, ahora no puedo ir ante los Pándavas y suplicar la paz de tal manera. He conquistado otros reinos, he protegido sin cesar mi propio dominio, he gozado de muchos placeres, he seguido el dharma, la riqueza y el deseo, y he quedado libre de deuda tanto con los antepasados como con el código del kṣatriya.”»
