Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how material incentive can distort judgment in a war setting: the impulse to betray a hidden enemy for reward contrasts with dharmic restraint and the ideal of acting without greed. It frames the ethical tension between expediency and righteousness.

Duryodhana is concealed in a lake. The speakers (as reported by Sañjaya) consider informing the Pāṇḍavas of his location, expecting a monetary reward, and state that they have clearly determined he is hiding in that very lake.
