Duryodhana’s Final Condition, Lamentation, and the Night’s Report
वैशम्पायन उवाच इति श्रुत्वा स नृपतिः पुत्रस्य निधनं तदा । नि:श्वस्य दीर्घमुष्णं च ततश्चिन्तापरो5 भवत्,वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--राजन्! इस प्रकार अपने पुत्रकी मृत्युका समाचार सुनकर राजा धृतराष्ट्र ग॒रम-गरम लंबी साँस खींचकर गहरी चिन्तामें डूब गये
vaiśampāyana uvāca: iti śrutvā sa nṛpatiḥ putrasya nidhanaṃ tadā | niḥśvasya dīrgham uṣṇaṃ ca tataś cintāparo 'bhavat ||
Dijo Vaiśampāyana: Al oírlo, el rey—al enterarse entonces de la muerte de su hijo—exhaló un suspiro largo y ardiente, y luego se hundió en una ansiedad devoradora.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the inevitability of sorrow as a consequence of war and attachment: even a king who is not on the battlefield is pierced by the results of violence through familial bonds and moral responsibility.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that Dhṛtarāṣṭra, upon hearing the report of his son’s death, exhales a long, burning sigh and becomes overwhelmed with anxious grief.
