Vidura’s Censure of Dicing and Warning to the Kurus

यह जूआ हम खेलनेवालोंके लिये एक विशिष्ट स्वर्गीय सुखका द्वार है। उसके आस- पास बैठनेवाले लोगोंके लिये भी वह वैसा ही सुखद होता है। इस प्रकार इसमें पाण्डवोंको भी हमारे समान ही सुख प्राप्त होगा। अतः आप पाण्डवोंके साथ द्यूतक्रीड़ाकी व्यवस्था कीजिये ।। धृतराष्ट उवाच वाक्यं न मे रोचते यत्‌ त्वयोक्तं यत्‌ ते प्रियं तत्‌ क्रियतां नरेन्द्र । पश्चात्‌ तप्स्यसे तदुपाक्रम्य वाक्‍्यं न हीदृशं भावि वचो हि धर्म्यम्‌,धृतराष्ट्रने कहा--बेटा! तुमने जो बात कही है, वह मुझे अच्छी नहीं लगती। नरेन्द्र! जैसी तुम्हारी रुचि हो, वैसा करो। जूएका आरम्भ करनेपर मेरी बातोंको याद करके तुम पीछे पछताओगे; क्योंकि ऐसी बातें जो तुम्हारे मुखसे निकली हैं, धर्मानुकूल नहीं कही जा सकतीं

dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca | vākyaṃ na me rocate yat tvayoktaṃ yat te priyaṃ tat kriyatāṃ narendra | paścāt tapsyase tad-upākramya vākyaṃ na hīdṛśaṃ bhāvi vaco hi dharmyam ||

Duryodhana dijo: «Este juego, para quienes lo juegan, es una puerta singular a los deleites celestiales; y para los que se sientan alrededor, también es igualmente placentero. Así, los Pāṇḍavas obtendrán un gozo igual al nuestro. Por ello, dispone el juego de dados con ellos.» Dhṛtarāṣṭra dijo: «Hijo, no me agrada el consejo que has pronunciado. Oh rey, haz lo que tú mismo deseas. Pero cuando pongas en marcha este juego, arderás luego en arrepentimiento, recordando mis palabras; porque un discurso como el que ha salido de tu boca no puede llamarse justo ni conforme al dharma.»

Educational Q&A

Even when a ruler chooses to follow personal desire, actions that violate dharma—here, initiating the dice-game—lead to inevitable remorse; speech and counsel should be dharmya (righteous) rather than driven by passion or hostility.

Dhṛtarāṣṭra responds to the proposal to arrange a dice-game with the Pāṇḍavas. He disapproves of the idea, yet weakly permits the king to proceed as he wishes, warning that once the gambling begins the instigator will later regret it because such counsel is not in accord with dharma.
