Dyūta-kathā-praśnaḥ — Inquiry into the Dice-Game Calamity
evaṁ me vartamānasya svasuteṣv itareṣu ca | bhedo na bhavitā loke bhedamūlo hi vigrahaḥ ||
The verse teaches that impartiality—especially by those in authority—prevents social conflict, because quarrels and hostility are fundamentally rooted in bheda (discriminatory division and favoritism).
Vaiśampāyana reports a speaker’s resolve to behave with equal regard toward his own sons and others, emphasizing that avoiding favoritism is necessary to prevent disputes in the world.
