The verse underscores how quickly martial power and collective pride collapse once the central support—leadership, morale, or the ‘crest’ of strength—is crushed; it reflects the Mahābhārata’s recurring warning about the fragility of power founded on adharma and arrogance.
Vaiśampāyana reports a grim assessment addressed to Sañjaya: the speaker sees virtually no survivors or effective remainder of the Kaurava host, describing it as already brought low and its chief strength trampled down amid the devastation of the war.
