Abhimanyu’s Śrāddha; Vyāsa’s Assurance of the Unborn Heir (अभिमन्योः श्राद्धं तथा गर्भरक्षणोपदेशः)
कुले महति जातासि क्षत्रियाणां महात्मनाम् | मा शुचश्चपलाक्ष त्वं पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणे
kule mahati jātāsi kṣatriyāṇāṁ mahātmanām | mā śucaś capalākṣa tvaṁ padmapatranibhekṣaṇe ||
Vaiśampāyana dijo: «Hija —de ojos como pétalos de loto— has nacido en un gran linaje de kṣatriyas de alma excelsa. Por ello, no te consumas en duelo por tu hijo de mirada inquieta».
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse offers ethical consolation: one should restrain excessive grief by remembering one’s dharma and the steadiness expected of a noble Kṣatriya lineage—sorrow is acknowledged but not allowed to overwhelm duty and composure.
Vaiśampāyana addresses a grieving woman, praising her noble birth and urging her not to lament for her son, using affectionate epithets (“lotus-eyed”) while redirecting her from sorrow toward fortitude.
