आजगाम महाबुद्धिरुत्तड़कश्नैनमब्रवीत् । न युक्त तादृशं दातुं त्वया पुरुषसत्तम
ājagāma mahābuddhir uttaḍakaś cainam abravīt | na yuktaṃ tādṛśaṃ dātuṃ tvayā puruṣasattama ||
Entonces Uttadaka, hombre de gran inteligencia, se acercó y le dijo: «Oh el mejor de los hombres, no es propio de ti dar un don semejante».
उत्तडुक उवाच
Even acts that appear generous must be governed by propriety (yukta) and dharma; a gift is not automatically virtuous if it is unsuitable, excessive, harmful, or violates rightful conduct.
Uttadaka arrives and directly admonishes a respected man (addressed as ‘puruṣasattama’), warning him that giving a particular kind of gift in the present situation is not appropriate.
