Adhyāya 42 — Mahābhūta–Indriya–Adhyātma-Vyavasthā
Brahmā’s Instruction on Elements and Faculties
Vāyudeva teaches about nivṛtti—an auspicious inward turning that refines subtle mental dispositions. This ethical-spiritual restraint operates in all beings and may manifest either gently (through soft persuasion and calm insight) or sternly (through strict discipline and corrective severity).
Vāyudeva, as the speaker, transitions to a deeper instruction (“therefore, next I will explain”) and introduces the topic of nivṛtti as a universal principle present in all creatures, setting up a discourse on how inner restraint guides conduct.
