Adhyāya 42 — Mahābhūta–Indriya–Adhyātma-Vyavasthā
Brahmā’s Instruction on Elements and Faculties
The verse distinguishes two sets of human faculties: five for knowing (cognitive senses, beginning with hearing) and five for acting (organs of action). Ethical discipline depends on recognizing these instruments and letting buddhi (discernment) guide both perception and action.
Vāyu-deva is instructing the listener in a doctrinal, Sāṅkhya-like classification of the senses, clarifying which faculties are for knowledge and which are for action, as part of a broader teaching on inner governance and right conduct.
