Discourse on Affliction, Guṇa-Equilibrium, and the Inner Battle
Joy and sorrow are mutually corrective and unstable; the mind swings between them, either yearning for happiness while suffering or recalling suffering even while enjoying comfort. The verse points toward steadiness and non-attachment amid changing emotional states.
Vāyudeva is speaking, offering a reflective observation on human experience: how people respond mentally to adversity and prosperity, and how opposite emotions arise to restrain or disturb the present state.
