Bhishma emphasizes that the excellence of certain gifts—cows, gold, and sesame—is not mere opinion but is repeatedly affirmed through Vedic/scriptural authority; thus, dāna performed in line with śāstra is a key practice of dharma.
In the Anushasana Parva’s instruction on dharma, Bhishma continues advising Yudhishthira and notes that he has already, on many occasions, explained the greatness of these specific forms of charity with references to Vedic proof.
