Nṛga-upākhyāna: Brāhmaṇa-sva and the Consequence of Misappropriated Gift-Cattle

Educational Q&A

A gift should be fit for its recipient and purpose; land given in charity—especially to a brāhmaṇa for livelihood and sacred duties—should be pure and conducive to dharma, not tainted by association with a cremation ground or with habitual wrongdoing.

In the Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma, including norms of dāna (charitable giving). Here he specifies what kinds of land are unsuitable to donate, emphasizing purity and ethical appropriateness in gifts.
