Charity is most meritorious when it is proactive and respectful—given in many forms to worthy people who are not begging. Such giving is equated with the steady, properly performed daily Agnihotra, yielding merit regularly (morning and evening).
In Bhīṣma’s instruction on dharma, he praises a specific mode of giving: the donor seeks out recipients who do not ask and offers varied gifts. He frames its spiritual value by comparing it to the fruit of the well-performed Agnihotra ritual.
