Adhyāya 59: On Giving to the Asker and Supporting the Non-asking

Educational Q&A

The passage frames social rupture and extreme violence as arising under the pressure of prārabdha (set destiny) and daiva (fate/divine agency), while also emphasizing the ethical gravity of such acts—especially harm to the unborn—and the idea that lineage and dharma can be restored through a righteous successor (Ūrva) who preserves the gotra.

A speaker addresses a king, predicting that although Kshatriyas are normally patrons of the Bhṛgu Brahmins, destiny will cause a split leading to the slaughter of the Bhṛgu line, even extending to unborn children. After this devastation, a powerful child named Ūrva will be born in the speaker’s lineage to revive and expand the Bhārgava gotra.
