Educational Q&A

Ethical discernment requires clarity not only about what is permissible (bhojya) and impermissible (abhojya), but also about resolving doubts through proper inquiry to an authoritative teacher, especially in matters of purity, acceptance, and expiation (prāyaścitta).

After Bhīṣma has described permissible and impermissible foods/sources, Yudhiṣṭhira raises a remaining doubt and requests Bhīṣma, addressed as ‘Pitāmaha,’ to clarify it—setting up the discussion on expiation related to accepting gifts and improper eating.
