Adhyāya 122 — Śruta-vṛtta-yukta Brāhmaṇa and the Ethics of Dāna

Maitreya–Vyāsa Saṃvāda

vyāsa uvāca | itas tvaṁ rājaputratvād brāhmaṇyaṁ samavāpsyasi | kīṭa-yonau janma labdhvāpi yo mayā darśitaḥ tvayā, tasya puṇyasya phalaṁ yat tvaṁ rājaputraḥ samabhavaḥ; adya ca yā mayi pūjā tvayā kṛtā, tasyāḥ phalena kṣatriya-yonim atikrāmya brāhmaṇatvaṁ prāpsyasi | go-brāhmaṇa-kṛte prāṇān hutvā ātmānaṁ raṇājire, rāja-kumāra, nānā-vidhān sukha-bhogān anubhūya ante yuddha-bhūmau gāṁ ca brāhmaṇāṁś ca rakṣituṁ prāṇān tyakṣyasi | tad-anantaraṁ brāhmaṇa-rūpeṇa yathāvat dakṣiṇā-yuktān yajñān anuṣṭhāya svarga-sukham upabhokṣyasi | tataḥ paścād avināśi brahma-svarūpaḥ san akṣayānandaṁ anubhaviṣyasi |

Educational Q&A

Merit gained through reverent encounter with the wise (darśana) and sincere worship (pūjā) can elevate one’s future births; righteous Kṣatriya conduct culminates in self-sacrifice for protecting the vulnerable (cows and Brāhmaṇas), followed by ritual responsibility (yajña with dakṣiṇā) and ultimately spiritual consummation in imperishable Brahman and inexhaustible bliss.

Vyāsa addresses a prince and foretells his karmic trajectory: earlier low birth is redeemed by the merit of seeing Vyāsa; present worship ensures that after a Kṣatriya life—ending in battlefield self-offering for the protection of cows and Brāhmaṇas—he will be reborn as a Brāhmaṇa, perform properly endowed sacrifices, enjoy heaven, and finally attain the imperishable Brahman-state.
