Yayāti’s Request for Youth: Sons’ Refusals and Pūru’s Acceptance (ययातेः यौवन-विनिमयः)
शिष्यस्याशिष्यवृत्तेस्तु न क्षन्तव्यं बुभूषता । तस्मात् संकीर्णवृत्तेषु वासो मम न रोचते,परंतु जो शिष्य होकर भी शिष्योचित बर्ताव नहीं करता, अपना हित चाहनेवाले गुरुको उसकी धृष्टता क्षमा नहीं करनी चाहिये। इसलिये इन संकीर्ण आचार-विचारवाले दानवोंके बीच निवास करना अब मुझे अच्छा नहीं लगता
śiṣyasyāśiṣyavṛttestu na kṣantavyaṃ bubhūṣatā | tasmāt saṃkīrṇavṛtteṣu vāso mama na rocate ||
Śukra dijo: «Cuando un discípulo se comporta de modo indigno de un discípulo, el maestro que busca el verdadero bien de ese discípulo no debe excusar tal insolencia. Por eso, vivir entre estos asuras de conducta mezclada y corrompida ya no me complace.»
शुक्र उवाच
A teacher who genuinely seeks a student’s welfare should not indulge or excuse behavior that violates the discipline and humility expected of a disciple. Tolerating insolence reinforces adharma; correction (including refusal to associate) is presented as a form of ethical guidance.
Śukra expresses displeasure at the improper, undisciplined conduct found among his disciples/associates (here characterized as Dānavas). Because their behavior is ‘mixed’ and corrupt, he declares that residing among them no longer appeals to him.
