Duḥṣantasya Vana-praveśaḥ

King Duḥṣanta’s Entry into the Forest Hunt

ब्रह्मणो ब्राह्मणानां च तथानुग्रहकाड्क्षया । विव्यास वेदान्‌ यस्मात्‌ स तस्माद्‌ व्यास इति स्मृत:,विद्वान्‌ द्वैपायनजीने देखा कि प्रत्येक युगमें धर्मका एक-एक पाद लुप्त होता जा रहा है। मनुष्योंकी आयु और शक्ति क्षीण हो चली है और युगकी ऐसी दुरवस्था हो गयी है। यह सब देख-सुनकर उन्होंने वेद और ब्राह्मणोंपर अनुग्रह करनेकी इच्छासे वेदोंका व्यास (विस्तार) किया। इसलिये वे व्यास नामसे विख्यात हुए

brahmaṇo brāhmaṇānāṁ ca tathānugrahakāṅkṣayā | vivyāsa vedān yasmāt sa tasmād vyāsa iti smṛtaḥ ||

Deseando mostrar favor a Brahmā y a los brahmanes, ordenó y amplió (dividió y dispuso) los Vedas. Porque realizó el “viyāsa” de los Vedas, se le recuerda por ello con el nombre de Vyāsa.
