Jarītā–Śārṅgā-saṃvāda: Ākhu-haraṇa and the Approach of Agni (आखुहरणं अग्न्यागमनश्च)
त्वया च सुमहत् तप्तं तपो राजन् वरार्थिना । याजयिष्यामि राजंस्त्वां समयेन परंतप,“राजन! यज्ञ कराना हमारा काम नहीं है; परंतु तुमने यही वर माँगनेके लिये भारी तपस्या की है, अतः परंतप नरेश! मैं एक शर्तपर तुम्हारा यज्ञ कराऊँगा'
tvayā ca sumahat taptaṃ tapo rājan varārthinā | yājayiṣyāmi rājaṃs tvāṃ samayena parantapa ||
Vaiśampāyana dijo: «Oh rey, has practicado una austeridad inmensa en busca de un don. Aunque dirigir sacrificios no es, por lo común, mi oficio, puesto que realizaste tan severa penitencia por esta misma petición, haré que se celebre tu sacrificio real—pero sólo conforme a una condición estipulada, oh abrasador de enemigos».
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Intense tapas undertaken for a desired end is acknowledged as powerful, yet even a granted request is framed within dharma through samaya (a binding condition). The verse highlights that religious acts like yajña are not merely transactional; they require proper authorization, responsibility, and ethical constraints.
Vaiśampāyana addresses a king who has performed severe austerities to obtain the boon of having a sacrifice conducted. He agrees to arrange the yajña, but only if the king accepts a specific condition (samaya), signaling that the forthcoming ritual will proceed under agreed terms.
